It’s summertime! Yay! I’m reminded of vacations and fun road trips. Are you old enough to remember the AAA Trip Tik? I loved those things. Rather than pull out a giant map of your destination, that you had to pull off the road to even read, they made a small ‘flip chart’ you could hold in one hand. One page displayed just one little leg of your journey. It showed you the exits, turns and even the roadblocks. And you got to flip a page every time you reached that segment destination.
Trip Tiks are a little outdated. Today, we just dial up the destination on our mobile phone GPS and press “GO.” A lovely voice tells us when to turn and where. Baby steps work well for us when we’re on the road. They also work well for us in life. In my career in the film and television business, I used the “baby steps” method to teach and write about complex equipment and software. It was very effective.
Over the past few months, I’ve been developing a new course that incorporates this baby-step approach. The course is called “Masterminding Your Life.” Some participants are calling it a “life-changing experience.” Why life changing? Because they are learning how to break down their life ‘trip” into baby steps themselves. Something we’re not always taught how to do, especially for creative projects.
One of my favorite quotes is from George Bernard Shaw. It’s stayed with me over the years. (Forgive me but I’ve messed with the pronouns to make it more politically correct.)
“Give a man to fish and she eats for a day.
Teach him to fish, and she eats for a lifetime.”
I’m on a mission to teach people how to fish. If you have a project—maybe you want to produce a CD, write your memoir, finally start art lessons, or launch a new side business—this may be the time to get your project over the finish line.
